My 3 Acre Farm in the Tropics - 6 Month Update: What I'm Planting
John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ gives you the 6-month update on his 3-acre tropical farm in Puerto Rico.
In this episode, I take you on a partial tour of my tropical farm. You'll get a detailed overview of the farm's current state, emphasizing the unique opportunities and challenges of farming in a tropical climate. From the outset, you'll be introduced to the vast array of tropical plants that thrive in this environment, setting the stage for an in-depth exploration of tropical agriculture.
In this second planting update, I provide a comprehensive look at the specific crops being cultivated on the farm. I'll meticulously explain the selection process for each plant, highlighting their benefits and suitability for the tropical climate of Puerto Rico. You'll learn about the diversity of crops, including fruits, vegetables, and herbs, and gain insights into the unique characteristics of each. This segment is particularly valuable if you're an aspiring tropical farmer or gardening enthusiast looking to expand your knowledge of exotic plants.
Throughout the episode, I share practical farming techniques and practices tailored to the tropical environment. From soil preparation and irrigation methods to pest management and organic fertilization, I'll provide a wealth of information that can be applied to both small-scale and larger farming operations. You'll appreciate the hands-on demonstrations and step-by-step guides that make complex agricultural concepts accessible and easy to understand.
Finally, I offer an update on the farm's progress since the last planting update, showcasing the growth and development of the crops. I'll discuss any challenges faced and the solutions implemented, providing you with a realistic view of the farming journey. This transparency helps you understand the dynamic nature of farming and the continuous learning process involved. By the end of the episode, you'll have gained a deeper appreciation for tropical farming, practical knowledge you can apply to your gardening projects, and a sense of connection to the ongoing story of my tropical farm in Puerto Rico.

Why Synthetic Fertilizers are Bad Your Gardening Questions Answered
I order sweet peppers that are from Cuba which they grow there in Puerto Rico called Aji Dulce they are slow-growing but delicious and would go well with your Culantro 🪴in Puerto they make a wet spice paste seasoning (Sofrito) that is delicious in all types of foods. Congratulations on your property.
I wish I could eat some fresh noni fruit one day.
God Bless you so very much, but how will you avoid having your house flood annually during heavy rain periods?
Congrats to your farm! What area of Puerto Rico is it located in?
Can you use a tomato cage to pull out the limbs
I’m on a well but they put chems in the water so good. Trick on the filter
dry the male plant out . Grind to a flour and soak in butter three days for brownies….and candy etc I do it all the time . I’ve cured people from eating pot lol because they get so high!!
I'm excited to see this happening here in LBC. Unfortunately this is a TRANSITIVITY to our ENVIRONMENT! All the PLASTIC BAGS will end up in our landfills and ocean!!! Along with the plastic bags that are not recyclable they break down to Micro & Nano plastics that we all NOW have in our bodies, like heavy metals, which can NOT be removed! The same is happening to our sea life that is CONTAMINATED and POISONED by this PLASTIC GARBAGE! I can NOT SUPPORT the ongoing devastation of our environment with this PLASTIC CRAP! ua-cam.com/video/G8MO_8Zfu3Q/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/MnCbTTTi7ic/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/users/shortsfuo6tt8jaHE ua-cam.com/users/shortsxvD0p48bZIM ua-cam.com/users/shortsPFPw59Bc8bg ceo.lacounty.gov/2020/02/03/sustainability/l-a-county-to-take-big-bite-out-of-plastic-pollution/

Congratulations! 🎉 Do you plan on dragonfruit cactus? Lots of tasty self fertile varieties you could probably plant and leave be, they'll grow like weeds!
Adding Boogie Brew to a municipal water supply line is not recommended. It may be illegal. Be sure to keep an inventory of bismuth subsalicylate.
Soft rock phosphate or seabird guano are good dry amendments for phosphate fertilizing.
How can we chat sometime? I would love to come work on your property. I have a permaculture property in costa rica.

Hey John , I’m one have your biggest fan. I’m so happy you bought land in my country. I have not been back there for about 15 years. I would love to buy 1 acre or three to live from the land and go back to minimalism do you have any suggestions? I don’t have as much money and fame as you do, how can I get in touch with you to get some information from you. Btw if you need seeds let me know, my cousins live in JAYUYA & they run several farms . 🙏🏻 god bless u sir. I hope you answer and not a robot and I hope that we could talk someday I seriously watch all your videos. I find them interesting and relaxing. .
John can we get an update on indoor cannabis growing? Thank you in advance!
Sugar is a poor substitute for stevia.
John i am so glad to see you finally have something like this! Awesome.
Looks great! Cool hat!
alcohol and water act the same kills on contact then dries and is harmless.
You have done so much already.Nice to see growing in the topic.John you should have access to some free seaweed.
colonizer! 🤣🤣🤣😂🤣😂✌
The name of the stinking toe tree is copinal. Ipé doesn't have anything edible that comes from it.
Congratulations once again! Has your friend ever come across any of the phytons that people have set out into the wild that I keep reading about in the Puerto Rican newspaper? You will definitely learn how to speak Spanish once you move to PR. LOL! 😊
Glad you’re doing well. The rest of us are living in vehicles & campers
Get a job.
oh ive spotted my favorite plant... not xD spanish needles/bidens pilosa, this stuff is horrible man actually you need to pull them with the root out and put them somewhere to decompose, no chop and drop on that thing, it grows like crazy, it will root from the top of the surface just right into the soil again from every node that has the opportunity, its so horrible because the seeds stick to your cloth very very bad and it makes 1000 per plant leading to uncontrolled amounts over the time, its edible but doesnt taste that good, the seeds also can be eaten thats what i do if i have overseen one and it produced already seeds, but usually i pull all of that shit right when i see it,first time pulling it i had 2m3 amount of this plant on a 1500sqm area.
He sounds Like Rick from rick & morty
How long would you think the cardboard box layered (so the erosion would be reduced) with fungi and worm casting teas... Near the trouble areas... What would be a good mass to keep water in the area... Rotten wood that absorbs water well...?
a pond with fish ✌
Amazing to see John’s progress I Remember the first garden tours you would do for your Ca home and now you own acreage and still have the same passion for gardening! very inspirational where you’ve come from and where you’re going!
You should look into getting a bunch of chickens they will eat all those weeds, and fertilize the area naturally, also you can put a roost and they make perfect pure fertilizer balls under each spot on the roost you can harvest easily. What I do is make a tea of chicken poop with a handful of calcium pills, and some rusting metal etc works very well for me.

Hey we were talking about doing exactly this in puerto rico also, because its a colony of the US, and it tropical, what a coincidence.
Missed the first video John, where you tell us of this property in Puerto Rico, will be making time to check it out. Mamey Americana? Never heard of it until now, taste like apricots and looks like a chicozapote,lol....the leaves are indeed very pretty. As for the Culantro herb, our landlady and friend of my mom's years ago pronounced this herb's name, for which my folks thought she was crazy, since cilantro is the correct name, now listening to you I'm thinking that she was thinking of this herb and not the true cilantro. :D
love that you have such fervor.
The Tainos took the land over from the previous group, and the previous group took over the land from the group before them, but it's only bad when Europeans do it. The pre-Columbian period of the Americas was plenty brutal and bloody, so maybe get a better perspective on the world other than just "white man bad". I hear the undertones of that all the time in your videos.
That doesn't excuse rampant greed. You should learn from your ancestors mistakes instead of defending them. ✌
But to pin it on a single people when everybody else has done it is stupid
@@BlackJesus8463 Every group in the history of the world has fought for resources. That’s the motivating factor in almost all conquest and war, and there isn’t one group that has a monopoly on that. Not defending, just pointing out the hypocrisy and revisionist history practiced by folks like you. Your ancestors did the same, so maybe you need some perspective.
That's great John. I am trying to get God to build me a hundred acre island down in the neighborhood of Puerto Rico. The Spanish and the US screwed those people over , the original people were mostly all killed off by the diseases the Spanish introduced to them then the US supposedly bought all of what they have down there from Spain and were supposed to liberate those people then backed out of the deal. The whole thing was really a scam, the real owner not counting God was the pope because they were the ones behind the Spanish conquests , the Spanish conquest were really a continuation of the Roman conquest under the Spanish flag, same with the British, the US, and others, the Roman Empire was never overthrown they faked it and put on a mask they created called the church/catholic church.
Say it again
where is your machete?
its a 40v string trimmer with a hard line.
John, Thanks for sharing!
Congrats!!! I started watching you when you had the front yard in ...Sonoma County? We met in Richmond CA at some Sustainable Living event. Your time in the desert was amazing. This is fantastic. 🫵🏽👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Yes, gardening where it rains is very nice.m🙏🏽💞🙏🏽
hey john I understand you believe the mammee americana should be soft when ripe but when they fall off the tree they are ready! they dont turn soft when ripe and edible they turn soft when they ferment. Julian lara speaks about this too. Love the videos keep up the content!
Are they better fermented? I bet they are!
I think about filling in the valley with soil to level, with a big retaining wall and pond on the lower side. To give easier access, deeper soil, more sun and generally add value to the property. Sometimes you can get free reasonably decent soil from developers.
oh dear...😮
@@californianorma876 😄
Not really. You should guess it's perfect soil if anything. Might have drainage problems in a hurricane or something. lol
@@BlackJesus8463 Yes the surface soil should be good, depends also on how deep it is, but it doesn't look easy to scramble up and down to work on it, and looks very shady. I doubt John has even been down to the bottom of the gully 😆
I have been so excited about this coming to fruition. ❤👍
congrats john
